If water is actively escaping, shutting it off is the single highest-value thing you can do. A single slow drip, one slow-draining fixture, or a running toilet you can shut off at the supply valve will almost always keep until morning without additional damage. It depends on where it's leaking from. A drip at a fitting or the relief valve can usually be isolated by closing the cold inlet and left until morning. Water coming from the body of the tank means the tank itself has failed, and that gets worse, not better — especially if the unit sits in an attic or a second-floor closet, which is common in newer Concord homes. Shut off the inlet, cut power to the unit, and call.
